This listing is for a reproduction of an original encaustic painting.
This piece features a typewriter floating amidst bubbles of text. I think of the bubbles as ideas, with the typewriter representing a communication device deep in the unconscious. There are also octopus tentacles in the background, poking about for tasty morsels and perhaps preparing to send out a message or two. Octopus are very curious - and intelligent - creatures!
The original, a 24" x 18" encaustic painting on panel, is currently available through 310 Art in Asheville, NC. If you do not see the original piece listed for sale, contact the gallery directly.
So, what's encaustic? Encaustic is an ancient medium, and archeologists have found encaustic artwork on wood and linen that's over 2000 years old, and in good condition. The tree resin raises the melting point of the wax, as well as making the final surface harder, shinier, and more durable.
Part of why I love encaustic is the incredible depth I can achieve and the soft, luminous quality it gives the work. Another thing I love? The incredible texture. The scan for this reproduction has been created using a special image capture technique that allows much of the original texture and depth inherent in encaustic to come through in the prints you order.
